The European Commission is informally investigating whether any antitrust regulations have been violated in Hollywood studios’ support of either the HD DVD or Blu-ray Disc. The new shift in focus onto the studios follows the EC’s launching of a broad inquiry into the competing formats in 2006.

WiMax, IEEE 802.16, is foreseen to be the key enabler for “last-mile connectivity” for mobile and fixed wireless access from homes and businesses to metro-wide area networks. How quickly and how well this is realized remains to be seen. Initial trials and buildouts are taking place primarily in Asia, the Middle East and Central and Eastern Europe.

Massachusetts has already set in motion plans that will require the use of open source applications in state offices. Requiring they use free and open programs is seen by some as a way to free government from Microsoft’s virtual monopoly in the office. However, with the software maker’s own Office Open XML format in the running as a potential government standard, the company could still score a win.

SAP has announced that one of its subsidiaries — Bryan, Texas-based TomorrowNow — made “inappropriate downloads” of documents from Oracle’s Web site. TomorrowNow was authorized to download documentation such as software patches, SAP said, adding that the information remained within the unit’s separate computer systems.

Once they got their hands on an iPhone, techies rushed to dissect the devices to discover the names of the companies that supplied the phone’s components. Samsung is making the main microprocessor used to run the iPhone’s operating system; Intel is supplying NOR flash; and Broadcom is making a controller chip believed to be used for managing the touch-screen display.

Adobe’s latest software targeting video professionals and graphic designers offers applications to help simplify their tasks. The features include sound editing programs alongside visual post-production tools and programs that transfer print images to Web formats. The focus on integrating mediums in Adobe’s new Creative Suite software follows several major and minor acquisitions made by the company over the years.

Amazon’s CustomFlix service has picked a side in the high-definition DVD format war. The online retailer has partnered with Microsoft to offer independent films on HD DVD. CustomFlix is a service that burns a disc for the customer when it is ordered, reducing inventory expenses. The program gives indie filmmakers the chance to distribute their work in a high-definition format, the companies said.
