The Skype Trojan Horse reminded users that instant messaging is a potential hotbed for propagating malicious payloads, and that trend is likely to continue in 2007, said MessageLabs chief security analyst Mark Sunner. “IM will continue to be a target through spam over IM and the spoofing of IM identities to lure users into disclosing data or following poisoned URLs.”

Online advertising revenue in the U.S. is expected to show growth of 31 percent to US$16.4 billion for this year, according to a report by eMarketer, an Internet consultancy. That spending represents 6 percent of the overall advertising market. Revenue for 2007, eMarketer said, will probably rise 19 percent to $19.5 billion.

A hacker claimes to have decrypted the next gen DRM standard for high definition DVDs. Called Advanced Access Content System, or AACS, this standard has been adopted by most of the major Hollywood and music studios to protect the newest DVDs and CDs. The tools and title keys used were posted on the Internet and a video of the decryption was posted on YouTube.

Microsoft’s Sync for automobiles — which includes hands-free Bluetooth technology and an in-vehicle operating system — will be offered as an option in Ford vehicles under an agreement the companies have entered. Ford is late to the game, though. Acura, BMW, Lexus, Lincoln and Jeep are among the manufacturers that already equip vehicles with built-in Bluetooth.

AT&T has offered additional concessions, including some limited network neutrality guarantees to win Federal Communications Commission blessing for its proposed merger with BellSouth. It also agreed to bring back 3,000 jobs that BellSouth had outsourced in recent years to offshore locations — a nod to labor interests favored by the Democratic commissioners.

Verisign is warning of a new worm that travels via e-mail with the subject “Happy New Year!” Users who open an attached executable file trigger installation of several different malicious code variants on their computers, which then execute mass mailings. The worm, which is already being heavily spammed, is being sent via over 160 domains, the security company said.

Intel said it would not object to a court order to produce documents related to its international business practices, as part of an antitrust case filed by rival Advanced Micro Devices. Intel also noted that a court-appointed Special Master explicitly said it was not making decisions about whether the evidence would be admissible in court.

The rumor season got started a month or so ago, with stories about patents that were granted to Apple for a different type of portable device. Those rumors quickly turned to calling the device the “iPhone.” Linksys has since released additions to its line of VoIP phones under the name “iPhone,” so we know what the name of the Apple device won’t be.
