Threatened Polar Bear Indicates Planet at Risk

The Bush administration has proposed placing polar bears on the threatened species list, but it still has not come to grips with the underlying cause. A warmer Alaska has been linked to river erosion, insect infestations, and the sinking of roads and pipelines into a not-so-permafrost. If humans don’t act soon, the Arctic may be only the beginning of a radically changed world.

132 Million People Access Internet in China

China’s communist government encourages Internet use for business and education, but tries to block access to material deemed subversive or pornographic. Dozens of people have been jailed on subversion or security charges for posting political essays online.

Climate Change Cited in Loss of Arctic Ice Shelf

A huge ice shelf that had been attached to Ellesmere Island near the North Pole broke free in 2005 to form an ice island in the Canadian Arctic. The event has been attributed to climate change. Warm temperatures in the spring may release the new ice island from its Arctic grip, scientists fear, making it an enormous hazard for ships.

AT&T/BellSouth Merger Approved

AT&T/BellSouth Merger Approved

The Federal Communications Commission unanimously approved AT&T Inc.’s $86 billion buyout of BellSouth Corp. on Friday (pdf), reports the AP. Google News has the latest.

Lawyers for AT&T and the two Democratic commissioners who had opposed the merger hammered out a compromise, the details of which were released Thursday night.

According to PDA 24/7 the “Kaiser” (pictured top left), a follow-on to the Hermes that adds GPS — a feature that’s becoming increasingly common in high-end Pocket PCs.

Free Ringtones from Verizon

Verizon Wireless is giving away a free ring tone to their users all day on New Years Eve (12/31). If you text “Tone” to 2007 on your phone you’ll get instructions on how to download a free ring tone. You can pretty much get any song. The promo code is only good for Dec. 31st.

Italy Opens 3.5 GHz for WiMAX

The Italian government has announced that it is opening the 3.5 GHz spectrum for WiMAX and will offer licenses for the band sometime in the first half of 2007, according to Reuters. To make space for the new technology, Italy has reassigned 3.4-3.6GHz from military use.

The move is expected to pull in a 100-200 million euros, far from Europe’s

Microsoft’s RSS Patent Application Raises Hackles

Microsoft’s application for a patent that would grant it broad rights over RSS, or really simple syndication, technology has caused an uproar in the Internet’s blogging community, where passions over openness and accessibility run high. The software giant claims it has no desire to take over the popular RSS technology — it just wants to make it better.
