Moto WiMAX: Going Mobile

Motorola will launch its first mobile WiMax handsets in 2008, reports Unstrung.


Motorola and Texas Instruments are developing chipsets and plan to focus on 802.16e mobile WiMAX, supporting voice, video and data for low-power mobile applications, according to the report.

Key Hubble Telescope Cameras Feared Lost

A problem with NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope may mean the orbiting telescope’s key capabilities are permanently lost. “This is a severe loss,” Mario Livio, senior astrophysicist with the Space Telescope Science Institute, told TechNewsWorld. “More than two-thirds of the observations currently done with Hubble are done with the ACS camera.”

Nintendo Plays on Nostalgia With New Releases

Nintendo on Monday added four classic titles to its collection of games available on the Wii Shop Channel, bringing the total to 46. Selling old games that have a nostalgic appeal to 20- and 30-something players is something Microsoft has tried with its Xbox 360. Sony may also have a similar system in the works for PlayStation 3.

Priceline, Travelocity, Cingular Pay Small Change to Settle Adware Case

As part of the settlement of a lawsuit brought by the New York State Attorney General’s Office over the use of adware as a marketing tool, Priceline, Travelocity and Cingular agreed to pay $35,000, $30,000 and $35,000, respectively, to New York to cover penalties and investigatory costs.

Generally defined as mobile phones built around a mobile operating system, smartphones have already found widespread acceptance in Europe. By the third quarter of 2006, market penetration in Europe was 8.8 percent among recent device buyers, compared with only 3.8 percent in the United States, according to a report by Telephia.

Sony Settles Secret Spyware Suit

The Federal Trade Commission announced Tuesday that the music company agreed to settle charges that it embedded potentially damaging anti-piracy software in some of its CDs without the knowledge of buyers. In the settlement, Sony BMG will allow consumers to exchange the CDs and reimburse them for up to $150 to fix any damage to their computers.

Amid Consumer Hype, Businesses Yawn at Vista

Though consumers got their first look at Vista Tuesday, businesses have been able to get their hands on the the new operating system since November. Even with the advanced availability, however, few businesses are rushing to adapt. The expenses to switch to a new OS can be steep, but Vista will likely catch on gradually as businesses upgrade their hardware.
