TomTom Steers Some Users Straight to Virus

A small number of drivers who use the TomTom satellite navigation system Go 910 may be in danger of infecting their computers with viruses that came preloaded with their devices, according to the manufacturer. TomTom is playing down the threat level, insisting that the viruses can be easily removed, but security experts at Kaspersky Lab have cast doubt on that assessment.

Sony Reports Lower Profit on PS3 Costs

Huge costs associated with launching its PlayStation 3 video game system led to Sony posting 5 percent lower quarterly profits compared with the same period a year ago. Sony was dealt another blow last year when it announced a massive global recall of about 10 million lithium-ion batteries used in not only its own laptops but also Apple, Dell, Lenovo and others.

Billionaire Jockeys for Motorola Board Seat

The company said Tuesday that Carl Icahn, who owns 1.4 percent of Motorola shares, intends to make a play for a seat on Motorola’s board at its annual shareholders meeting. Icahn, who has a long and varied record as an investor and agitator for change, previously made waves at TWA and Time Warner and, if elected, may demand that Motorola do more to solidify its market position in the handset space.

Oracle Winner Learns Spaceflights Aren’t Free

In 2005, Brian Emmett scored a trip to space by winning a Java code contest sponsored by Oracle. Later, he learned the hard facts of life: Uncle Sam wanted his cut of the prize’s value. Emmett decided the taxes would be too much and forfeited his seat. Other companies are also promising rides to space as contest prizes, but the winners — even those who can afford the taxes — are often left waiting for delivery.

Adobe Unveils Photoshop Lightroom 1.0

Adobe Systems on Monday announced pricing and availability for Photoshop Lightroom 1.0, software that allows graphic artists and photographers to manipulate raw camera images. Features include detailed control over an image’s white balance, color saturation, and sharpness, as well as provide help with the management and workflow associated with handling large numbers of images.

UN Report to Give Evidence of Global Warming

Officials gathered in Paris on Monday for a week of finalizing the long-awaited United Nations report on global warming. In the report, which is due Friday from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, scientists hope to reach a consensus on how fast temperatures and sea levels are likely to rise over the next century.

PepWave Client Adds LCD

PePWave released a new model with built-in Signal Bars and other features today, says Alex Chan of PePWave. The LCD bar indicator allows the metro Wi-Fi subscribers to self-install the Wi-Fi modem easier. You don’t need to connect a computer before you can find a good position to locate the device.
