The DST change will be here soon — clocks will “spring forward” an hour on March 11 and not “fall behind” an hour until Nov. 4 — but the change wasn’t sprung on the world suddenly. It was authorized in a new Energy Policy Act signed into law by President Bush on Aug. 8, 2005. Nevertheless, many people forgot about it.

When Google released its Google Apps Premier Edition, it sent a clear message to Microsoft that the market for office software was up for grabs. However the challenge plays out, one thing is clear: Customers will benefit. “What I like about this scenario is that now there’s competition, and that serves customers,” said Laura DiDio, an analyst at Yankee Group.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 gaming consoles which will go on sale in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Australia on March 23 will not be as compatible with PlayStation 2 games as those sold elsewhere. “Hard-core gamers” who buy PS3s are “probably going to shift their budget to that new platform anyway,” said Michael Cai, Parks Associates gaming analyst.

Microsoft has been ordered to pay $1.52 billion to Alcatel-Lucent for infringing on two patents that convert audio into the MP3 format. Microsoft has stated that it expects the ruling to impact multiple other firms that have licensed the technology. The award is one of the largest patent awards on record. Alcatel-Lucent initially sought $4.5 billion.

Hitachi has unveiled a radio frequency identification chip that it claims is the world’s smallest, at just 0.002 inches by 0.002 inches. Though the accomplishment is a “sign of innovation in the market,” according to Michael Liard, research director of RFID at ABI Research, “we are still several years away from having any practical business solutions realized.”

A bill recently filed in Congress targets online predators by mandating that schools and libraries block minors’ access to social networking sites and chat rooms unless they have an educational purpose. A bill submitted by another legislator calls for the FTC to issue consumer alerts and establish a unique Web site to educate parents on Internet predators.
