3.65GHz: Made for Independent ISPs
Tim Sanders has a think piece on the “lightly regulated” 3.650 GHz band. In a 30-page ruling (pdf), the FCC said that using restricted, contention-based protocols would “facilitate operation of the widest variety of broadband technologies with minimal risk of interference.”
The FCC recently blessed WiMAX gear in the bottom 25 MHz of the 50 MHz available in the 3.65 GHz range.

Nokia-Siemens: $900M Indian Contract
Nokia Siemens Networks won a $900 million contract from India’s largest mobile phone operator, Bharti Airtel, to help expand its communications network, both companies said Tuesday.
Under the two-year, 660 million euro contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will install 1.8 million ports and also set up an international calling card prepaid service that will help the Indian company add 4.5 million new customers.

Google Onboard Grand Central
Google said yesterday that it had bought GrandCentral Communications, acquiring a service that lets people use a single number for all their phones, reports the NY Times.
Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

GrandCentral users can also create a single mailbox, accessible over the Internet, for all their phone messages.
Users register their phones and can set all or some of them to ring based on who is calling.

Frontline: Rumble in the Jungle

AT&T: Free WiFi with DSL
AT&T, which knows a marketing trick or two, today announced its DSL customers can now receive free WiFi access over AT&T’s network — which includes nearly 10,000 hot spots including airports, McDonalds, Barnes & Noble, coffee shops and popular sporting venues.
With one of the nation’s largest Wi-Fi networks, AT&T can encourage more iPhone users to subscibe to DSL services.
