AT&T: Free WiFi with DSL
AT&T, which knows a marketing trick or two, today announced its DSL customers can now receive free WiFi access over AT&T’s network — which includes nearly 10,000 hot spots including airports, McDonalds, Barnes & Noble, coffee shops and popular sporting venues.
With one of the nation’s largest Wi-Fi networks, AT&T can encourage more iPhone users to subscibe to DSL services.

Many high schools have instituted zero-tolerance policies for iPods and other MP3 players, banning them from campus completely. Other schools, however, are playing with policies that allow the devices, at least in the halls and libraries. Students say music helps them concentrate, and some teachers say they could never really figure out why they were forbidden outside of class in the first place.

Certain popular Web sites — including MySpace and YouTube — are no longer accessible to users of military networks. Critics are decrying the hardship the ban causes to soldiers deployed overseas, who have relied on social networking to stay close to family and friends, and have no Internet access other than the DoD nets.

Now that Supreme Court has ruled that the EPA is responsible for cutting greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles, President Bush has called for cuts in CO2 emissions. The goals include measures that would significantly increase government fuel efficiency requirements in small cars for the first time in two decades. The move, however, may come too late in his presidency to have any real teeth.

Bill Gates touted Vista sales, unveiled the new name for the server version of Windows — “Windows Server 2008″ — and focused on the rise of networked homes in a speech at the annual Windows Hardware Engineering Conference. This may mark Gates’ last speech at the annual meeting, as he is slowly becoming less involved with the company’s main operations.

At a conference in New York, DirecTV CEO Chase Carey commented that his company may begin testing the delivery of high-speed Internet access over electrical lines. While DirecTV is enjoying growth among its television subscriber base, it currently has no Internet services of its own to offer, giving it a disadvantage when trying to compete with triple play offerings.
